With ageing the soft discs between the vertebrae dry out and shrink in size. This reduces the space between the vertebrae and makes the spine less flexible. You may experience back pain, weakness or numbness due to disc degeneration. Some people experience no symptoms due to disc degeneration but the flexibility is definitely reduced even in such people.

People who have weak back muscles are more prone to this condition. If you exercise regularly and have strong paraspinal muscles then the pressure on the discs is reduced and their degeneration is much slower. It is therefore extremely important to do regular exercise and include the muscles of the back in your exercise regimen.
