Acute Appendicitis

The appendix is a small, finger shaped pouch of intestine that extends from the first part of the large intestine. It is found in the right lower quadrant of the abdomen. The purpose of the appendix is unknown; however it is not believed to have any significant function.

If the appendix ruptures and the patient develops peritonitis, the doctors would be prescribing antibiotics. Our surgeon will need to drain out the infected material and disinfect the abdominal cavity. The pain of appendix is felt in the right side of abdomen and a simple ultrasound is done to diagnose the condition of acute appendicitis. The appendix pain is sometimes very severe and if the appendix ruptures it may pose danger to the life of the patient.

Appendix Treatment & Surgery

Appendicectomy is a surgical procedure to remove the appendix from the abdomen. It can be performed either with a small incision on the abdomen or laparoscopically (key hole surgery or a minimally imvasive surgery done specifically by trained surgeon). Appendix pain is generally very sharp and can happen to all ages. Adults as well as children can have this pain and may need surgery. In case of children a paediatric surgeon is an ideal choice for surgery.

Laparoscopic Appendectomy or appendix surgery is a common surgery and the best treatment for inflammed appendix. The Laparoscopic Appendicectomy or appendix removal surgery means making three or more tiny openings less than a centimeter in size across the lower part of the abdomen. The appendix is freed and taken out through one of the openings. The openings are then closed up. Hospital stay is just 1 to 2 days and recovery period is also very fast.
